Layering Jewelry for Summer

July is already here and the temperature is climbing. Summer style is all about staying cool, comfortable and colorful.

Here's how to do it:

Start with a simple, soft, solid-colored shift dress... it's worth the time to find the dress you never want to take off. By accessorizing with different jewelry, you can wear it over and over while keeping it fresh. (This one is the "Presto Dress" in Royal Purple by Horney Toad... my personal FAVORITE.)

Next, play with layered necklaces to take advantage of the scoop neckline. Why do layered necklaces work so well? Artistically, the eye has a lot to experience: color, texture, pattern, line and even movement as each necklace will swing to its own rhythm. Think about bringing in something faceted and sparkly (the long necklace), something all metal with an interesting pattern (medium), and something short and sweet that you can keep on when the others are removed for swimming (silk teardrop necklace).

*Remember to keep it simple. If you layer three necklaces, choose subtle earrings or go earring-free. If you wear stunning chandelier or hoop earrings, pull your hair back and skip the necklaces. Less is more when summer temperatures are high.

The necklace is not the only accessory that loves to be layered! Play with rings too. Mix gemstones, with simple bands. Create a bold, fun, and artistic statement. Small, delicate rings become an eye-catching ensemble. Pictured here: Faceted Carnelian Ring, Hammered Band, Prehnite Ring. (Britta's gemstone rings are on sale until 7/17/11 on Anja Artisan Jewelry.)
